Wheel of the Year

2022

I was introduced to the Celtic Wheel of the Year by Claire Davey, an Irish herbalist and proprietor of the America Village Apothecary in Galway County, Ireland. It represents eight significant, and equally spaced points during the year: the Summer & Winter solstices, the Spring & Fall equinoxes, and four cross-quarter festivals that mark the midpoint of the four seasons.

For that last couple of years, paying attention to these 'festivals' has been grounding and comforting. By focusing on the eight spokes of the Wheel, I immerse myself in the seasons - noticing the quality of light, the changes in the land, the physical sensations provoked by the weather, and how it all affects my behavior. The practice is both spiritual and ordinary:

  • I recognize a profound interconnectedness between myself and my surroundings.

  • But, I am also going about my business, as humans have always done. The seasons are just a way of marking time as the cycles of life repeat.

I am excited to share my physical interpretation of the Wheel in the form of quilts. Each quilt will be revealed via newsletter on its festival day, then shared on this website. The archive of newsletters can be found here.
